Squarespace accessibility checker & how to fix what it reports
Run the free check on any page of your Squarespace site first, then use the steps below — every step is done in the Squarespace editor itself, and cites Squarespace's own documentation.
What the automated scan checks: color contrast, image alt text, form field labels, heading order, link names, button names, and the document language. Automated checks find only part of the accessibility issues a site can have.
Fix Color contrast
What the scan reports: Text color does not stand out enough against its background. Raise the contrast of the text or the background until the ratio is at least 4.5:1 (3:1 for large text).
Open the site styles panel (brush icon) > Colors: pick each theme's background and text color pairs. Squarespace shows the palette section you are editing; change the TEXT color until it reads clearly against that BACKGROUND. If a section places text over an image, add an overlay or darken the background so the text still reads clearly.
Fix Image alt text
What the scan reports: Images without alt text are invisible to screen readers. Give every meaningful image a short description.
In the page editor, click the image, click the pencil (Edit), open the Content tab, and fill in the Image alt text field. For gallery sections, the image Description field is what screen readers use as alt text, so fill in the description; for gallery blocks, use the image title or description. For product images: Products > click product > Images > add alt text. Squarespace's SEO Report tool (Pages > click the page's gear > SEO, or Home > Marketing > SEO) also lists images missing alt text.
Fix Heading order
What the scan reports: Headings should step down one level at a time (h1, h2, h3 ...) and the page needs exactly one h1.
In the page editor, each text block's toolbar has a format dropdown (Heading 1-4); set the page's main title as one Heading 1 and each following section as Heading 2, then Heading 3 inside it. Do not skip levels. Squarespace's built-in features guide points to headings to structure text.
